Multifactor authentication: SMS and voice (phone calls) are being phased out

Microsoft is discontinuing SMS and voice as multifactor authentication (MFA) methods. Microsoft will completely deactivate the service on 1 February 2027.

Consequently, these two methods will be deactivated as login methods for the University’s IT systems in January 2027. From that point onwards, SMS and voice can no longer be set up or used to confirm a login.

If you are currently using only text messages or phone calls as your MFA method, please set up an alternative MFA method well before the deactivation date at https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info. You can subsequently remove your stored telephone number from the authentication methods if desired; it is not deleted automatically.
